Amy Johnson Residence

A Small Assisted Living Community in St. Paul

Amy Johnson Residence is a licensed assisted living home in St. Paul serving adults living with mental illness. With approximately 25 residents, we are intentionally small enough to know each resident well and provide individualized support within a shared community.

Community Living + Individualize Support

Amy Johnson Residence may look different from what many people picture when they hear the words “assisted living.” Residents live in a shared residential setting rather than private apartments.  This model is intentional. Community creates regular opportunities for connection and helps reduce isolation, while residents still have individual goals, preferences, routines and choices.

Life Happens Together Here

Life at Amy Johnson Residence includes structured support, but it also includes all the ordinary things that make a place feel like home.

Residents cook together, celebrate birthdays and holidays, tend the garden, play cards and board games, listen to and make music, read, visit with friends and spend time together around the house. Beyond the residence, outings have included libraries, museums, the Como Conservatory, the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, restaurants, shopping, community events and plenty of stops for ice cream.

An Historic St. Paul Home

The home at 89 Virginia Street was designed in the late 1800s by architect Cass Gilbert, who later designed prominent buildings including the Minnesota State Capitol and the United States Supreme Court building. It began serving older adults as the Ekelund Residence for Retired People in 1959. Donetta and Theodore Johnson purchased the property in 1978 and renamed it Amy Johnson Residence in honor of Theodore’s mother.

Located in St. Paul’s historic Crocus Hill neighborhood, the residence is surrounded by places to walk and opportunities to stay connected to the broader community.
